First Steps with Bytecode Visualizer LT

Bytecode Visualizer LT is a free version of Bytecode Visualizer. You can compare the differences between the two products here.

If you have installed both Bytecode Visualizer and Bytecode Visualizer LT you probably want to evaluate a free trial of Bytecode Visualizer first. In such a case, please follow The First Steps with Bytecode Visualizer.
We recommend this because Bytecode Visualizer offers much more functionality which would stay invisible to you if you start with Bytecode Visualizer LT. You may get back to this document anytime in the future.

1. Licensing

Bytecode Visualizer LT is a free. You do not need to buy a license to use it.

2. File Associations

There are many situations in which Eclipse opens a *.class file: CTRL-Clicking into a class/method/field without source code, Stepping into in Debugger, etc. In such situations, Eclipse is using the default editor for the *.class file type.

Bytecode Visualizer LT is not set as default editor for *.class files during the installation. So, you probably want to adjust the File Associations in Preferences:

Window > Preferences > General > Editors > File Associations

Set default file association for Bytecode Visualizer

Select the file type *.class and set Bytecode Visualizer LT as Default

3. Review and Adjust Preferences

Bytecode Visualizer LT is not as adjustable as Bytecode Visualizer. The preferences for both of them live in

Window > Preferences > Dr. Garbage > Bytecode Visualizer

Bytecode Visualizer LT listens only to some of them:

  • where the control flow graph should be displayed: split pane in the editor or separate view
  • displaying/not displaying Line Number Table and Local Variable Table
  • rendering/not rendering try/catch blocks
  • graph colors
  • syntax highlighting
  • which Bytecode Editor's tab should be selected by default: Bytecode or Source code (if available)
